For my peacemaker I was lucky enough to pick Dr Helen Caldicott. Before digging into details of who this activist women really is , Dr. Caldicott has been known for her articulate skills and her passion as an advocate of citizens , the action to remedy the nuclear and environmental crises within society. Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1938, Dr Caldicott received her medical degree from the University of Adelaide Medical School. During 1961. Dr. Helen Caldicott had lead three revolutions within her lifetime. One against French nucleate pacific ,The Uranium mining in Australia , and nuclear freeze in United States of America. Within 5 yrs in the u.s. she was able to raise awareness by eighty percent. She had founded the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at the Hospital of Adelaide Children’s during 1975 for she always actively cared for the upcoming generations, along with her own.. In her midst of her local devotion, Dr. Caldicott served over forty two years of international campaign to educate the public about the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behavior to stop environmental destruction.
Upon expansion of her growth in chemical studies she was able to bring educational information from Australia to the United States of America.
Dr. Caldicott became an instructor in pediatrics at Harvard Medical. After serving some time within the school, Dr.Caldicott graduated and found a job on the staff of the Children’s Hospital Medical Center, in Boston, Mass. Dr.Caldicott had worked up until 1980 for she had been resigned to work full time on the prevention of nuclear war.
In 1971 during the Australian opposition against the French atmospheric nuclear testing in the Pacific, Dr Caldicott played a major role by supplying her support, and guidance against nuclear bombing. In 1975 Dr.Caldicott had worked with the Australian trade unions to educate their members, and locals who were interested about the medical dangers of the nuclear fuel cycle, by giving particular examples from the uranium mining that took place at her home in Australia.
Dr.Caldicott is considered a peacemaker for how she actively tried to educated those whom were around her during these nucleic incidents. While Dr. Caldicott lived in the United States from 1977 to 1986, Dr.Caldicott was able to build an organization of 23,000 doctors committed to educating their colleagues about the dangers of nuclear power, nuclear weapons and nuclear war. Dr.Caldicott’s role throughout her teachings played a major part for many others around her. Dr.Caldicott had won a Nobel Peace prize in 1985 for being apart of the International Physician For The Prevention of Nuclear War. Dr.Caldicott went back to Australia in 1987, and during her time back she ran for Federal Parliament. Dr.Caldicott had defeated Charles Blunt, in the battle of it all. Though she lost the voting war by 600 votes out of 70,000 cast. She moved back to the United States in 1995, where she lectured at the New School for Social Research for the media. Dr.Caldicott’s goal in it all was to raise awareness, and educate those on what the world will or could go through if no one was ever willing to prevent the use of nucleic materials.
